Concussion and Crabs:)

AHHHH life with teens! A comedian once said, "What does having four kids feel like?" the answer was "your drowning and someone hands you a baby". LOL so funny even though it doesn't feel like that but with four teenagers we are seriously always busy, someone seems to always be hurt from sports or ranch life and someone is ALWAYS starving because they haven't eaten in the last twenty minutes :)

Thursday morning wake up at 445am to get Josh to the Gas station at 515 where his coach so graciously takes a bunch of the kids to practice by 530am from our town to the town the school is in. It helps so much and we are grateful that he does this because its another 15 miles there and then 20 miles back to the house. I get home. Sleep for 30 more minutes before the next round of kids get up. Breakfast, showers, and then out the door where I drive them to their bus stop 5 miles away. As I am driving them to the bus stop Josh calls and you can tell he had been crying. He promptly tells me that they think his nose is broken so I am like ok....I will be there in a second. Drive 15 more miles to school. Pick him up and talk to the coach and off to the ER we go. I don't even think the other kids have gotten off the bus at school yet.

Josh is definitely in a daze. His pupils are way dilated but he doesn't look like he has a broken nose. His eye was starting to turn black. I asked how it happened. He said he has no idea, he got hit, not sure what hit him but he knew it wasn't the ball. He saw stars. We get to the ER and they checked him out. He didn't have a broken nose which was good but he did have a concussion. He was acting weird so I knew he got his bell rung pretty good. Dr said to go home and watch him today. We text the coach and told him because there was a game the next day. Called the school to find out the rules and CIF rule states if they have a concussion they are not allowed to play for 7 days. I was happy about this rule even though Josh was really upset he wasn't going to be able to play the next game. I just think the safety of our kids is the first and foremost important thing. If you have a concussion its super easy to get another and end up with brain damage. So I was glad that coaches, school and parents were together on this. Josh wouldn't be able to practice or play but he would be able to go to the game and go to practice and sit and support his team. Learn more by watching. His Coach told me he has been getting a lot better and gave me reassurance because Josh was upset and really trying to work hard to be able to play more in the games.

Fast Forward to Friday. Josh is doing much better. He iced his eye and it doesn't look like a black eye much anymore and swelling has gone down. Eyes are back to normal. Josh didn't even really remember going to the hospital. Today he went to school and left with his team to the game to support them from the bench.
Josh back to his normal crazy self

Josh and Jackson both had games. Both the games were won too. Jackson had Varsity game in a different area than JV this time. They were both away games so we didn't attend as we had tickets to the annual Crab Feed and had to get Jason there also since he was serving it as his 4H volunteering. The day was interesting so we definitely liked the distraction of going to the feed. We sat with this very nice family that runs some cattle on the ranch and had a really good time.
Having good time at Crab feed

I swear my hands could not crack anymore crab even using the tool. Ryan was in for the count. Our friend sitting across from us and Ryan just went to town eating. His wife and I were out before they were halfway done lol. It was pretty funny.
All you can eat Crab

The 4H did a amazing job serving and making sure everyone in the community had everything they wanted. I was super impressed with Jason serving other tables and making sure they had everything with a smile. He did a really good job. Later I even had another mother come up to me and tell me what a good kid he was. That always makes a moms heart warm. He did good! And all with a smile.

Jason doing a great job Volunteering

The night ended great. They had a tip jar and all the kids who worked split the tips and got 28 dollars each. We won a 1/4 beef from Frosty Acres who has the BEST beef! Its All Natural Grass Fed Beef. I text my friend to tell her we bid on her beef and won:) She text me back to tell me how Jackson was doing at the game. He was able to play a lot and was doing really well. We were full and ready to go home. After clean up the kids ate tons of pizza (I think Jason had 7 slices alone) and out the door we went.

You know one thing I really love is our friends and this community. With Four kids at all different grades and events its not always easy to be at every single thing they are at. We kind of made it to where if its a home game or event we are ALWAYS there so they can always count on that part. Its nice to have friends who will always cheer on the kids or help with rides or what not so everyone can be at everything they need to be at. We wouldn't of been able to split our body up at Jason's 4H event, Josh game in one town an hour away and Jacksons game in another town an hour half away plus Cassie at home tired. I am so thankful for our friends....

Question: Do you believe kids should wait a certain amount of time to play again when have a concussion?

Allergies and Basketball

First off this was a great day because we didn't have to get up at 445am to take Joshua to Basketball practice because the JV and Varsity have games tonight.

Jackson and Cassie had Dr appts so I drove them to Canby to see our family Dr. Dr Edmonds is an amazing Dr to me. He treats our whole family, was the one to diagnose me with the Rare Disease Cushings and is so nice to our kids and really listens to them. I love having him as our country community Dr.

Jackson had to see him because when he was coming back from his mothers on Christmas break back to our house he had a headache and took some of her over the counter Migraine medicine. Well needless to say we (all three parents) were all worried when he boarded the plane starting to get hives and his lips blew up to four times the size they are. Thankfully he had Benadryl and all ended up okay. I made an appt that day to get allergy testing. It wasn't something we ever wanted to repeat again. This is Jacks Shoulder and lips. (he said of course I can use this).

Jacks lips...no its not duck face
After seeing the Dr we found out that he is highly allergic to Aspirin. So we are all going to be VERY diligent on that. He said the next time his throat could close because he has such a bad reaction. We always give him Tylenol based stuff at our house so we never knew he had this problem. The Dr talked to him a lot about reading the labels on everything. Being contentious of taking meds from anyone or if they are mixed with others that could be aspirin. A lot of cold and flu medicines have that in them and migraine medicines also so we will have to worry about that. Once I got home after taking them back to school I went through any meds we have to make sure. I am glad we found out though. We know that it is in the top 5 for allergies. It cannot go away by taking small doses like some allergy places will do. He said its as serious as a peanut allergy so to be very careful.

Cassie was able to go in after wearing her back brace (from her cart accident) and finally get it off. We had to do an Xray and exam but she is able to now not have it. She still has very limited activity for 3 more weeks. She was so happy to have her brace off and be able to bend finally. We will be starting physical therapy this next week for a couple months to strengthen her back again. I am just glad that her fracture has been healing properly. We also got medication for her because she has ovarian cysts. Those are so painful and I feel bad she gets them. Its hereditary and I got them at her age also. PAINFUL....not a good thing to have pain in the stomach all the time. All in all we ended up getting everything done.
Cassie happy her brace is off

After taking the kids back to school I came home to bake brownies and deal with some school things so I could  be back at the school by 330 to watch Josh and Jacksons basketball games. Ryan was to meet me there at 330 as he was working.

The games I was happy with. We won both games. Cardinal pride was at its finest as usual. Bake sale went off great for the Junior Class. Once again I swear we had our kids coming and asking for money every two seconds to eat. All four kids were there. Jason only got to see the last game as he has basketball practice after school daily. I was proud of my kids. Josh and Jack both played well when they were in. I love being able to cheer on everyone! yelling for all the kids along with mine. Its an exciting time in the kids lives and I am happy we can be there to watch it. Cassie was hanging with her friends. Jason after getting bunch of food was sitting with his and the other two were playing. Next year will be great because all four kids will be playing on the same day. That will make things so much easier and hey...money saving because they wont have to pay to get in the game haha!

All in all it was a good day. I am glad that we have a good Dr., a good school, a good life. I love sitting with our friends on game days and all of us cheering on each other kids. This community may be small but its definitely a strong one.

Question: Do you have a family Dr? Or do you go to whoever is available at the time?
